The Compassion in Balance Program: Team Trainings
CiB Resilient Team Trainings
Building resilience is a team sport.
Note: The CiB program has 3 components: Self Study Course, Team Trainings, and Resource Center that can be combined in various ways to create a learning experience that works best for your organization.
The people we work with (and how we work together) have a tremendous impact on our wellbeing.
One of the strongest protective factors against compassion fatigue and workplace stress is social support.
We don't build resilience in isolation. We build it through meaningful relationships, healthy communication, and shared skills that help us navigate difficult work together.
The Resilient Team Trainings were created to help animal welfare teams do exactly that.
What Are The Team Trainings?
These six ready-to-use team learning experiences combine short videos, facilitated discussions, worksheets, and practical activities that help coworkers learn and practice resilience skills together.
Designed specifically for animal welfare organizations, the trainings can be facilitated by a supervisor, manager, wellbeing committee member, volunteer, or other designated point person within your organization.
No outside facilitator required.
What Will The Teams Learn?
Together, participants will learn how to:
- Reduce reactivity during stressful situations.
- Communicate more constructively with coworkers.
- Better understand and manage difficult emotions.
- Focus their energy on what they can control.
- Practice realistic optimism.
- Express appreciation and gratitude.
- Build trust and supportive relationships.
- Create a values-based team culture.
These are practical skills that help teams navigate the realities of high-stress animal welfare work together.
Why Team Learning Matters
Individual wellbeing matters, but workplace culture matters, too.
Healthy, supportive teams don't happen by accident. They are built intentionally through shared experiences, meaningful conversations, and opportunities to learn and practice new skills together.
The Team Trainings help create space for those conversations.
Whether your goal is to strengthen trust, improve communication, normalize conversations about stress, or simply provide staff with dedicated time to connect and reflect, the Team Trainings offer a flexible and approachable way to support your people.
"Our Animal Control staff have really enjoyed the material so far. It’s been challenging but relevant and important.
One employee said, 'This is actually good because you’re telling me helpful things and you’re not telling me to take a bubble bath.'
I am calling this a HUGE success. Thank you!"

Flexible Implementation
Every organization is different.
Some groups facilitate one training each month during staff meetings. Others incorporate them into professional development days or wellbeing initiatives,
There is no right way to use the Team Trainings.
Choose the pace and format that best fit your organization's time, capacity, and goals.
"We've been hosting the team training sessions every other month or so with a few different windows for folks to join if they're comfortable, and we've made copies of the worksheets to leave in our break room…
It's been so fun to hear them ask each other questions about gratitude, their stress levels, and being open with each other based on the prompts from the worksheets.”
- Shelter Manager, U.S. Animal Shelter
Who Should Facilitate The Trainings?
The Team Trainings were intentionally designed so that you don't need to hire an outside facilitator.
They can be facilitated by:
- Managers and supervisors
- Leadership team members
- HR
- Wellbeing committee members
- Volunteer coordinators
- Staff champions
- Veterinary Social Workers
- Volunteers with facilitator skills
Everything you need to guide meaningful conversations is provided.
What These Trainings Are (and Aren't)
These trainings are not therapy or group counseling sessions.
They are facilitated educational experiences designed to help teams build practical resilience skills and strengthen supportive workplace relationships.
The goal isn't to eliminate workplace stress. It's to help people feel better equipped and better supported as they navigate it together.
“Today we did training four. It was amazing and so valuable for the team!
Facilitating these sessions has brought joy and fulfillment into my work life!”
- Shelter Veterinarian, Guam Animal Shelter
